THE WOLF IN MEXICAN CULTURE
The Mexican wolf, scientifically known as Canis lupus baileyi, has become an icon in Mexico's natural history. Revered in pre-Hispanic times, it has symbolized strength and adaptability in various indigenous cultures, playing an integral role in legends and ceremonies that reflect a profound spiritual connection with wildlife and nature. For native peoples, its existence has been synonymous with ecological balance and a living representation of freedom and the indomitable spirit of the Mexican landscape.
Unfortunately, the Mexican wolf has suffered a dramatic population decline due to hunting, habitat loss, and the demonization it has faced throughout history. As active members of the Mexico-United States Binational Committee for the Protection of the Mexican Wolf, our organization is committed to restoring its population and reclaiming its place as a vital symbol of cultural heritage and biodiversity in the country.
